Journaling: Notes from this photo are directly from Grandpa: “Dad shot the hawk that had been stealing our chickens. Roy and I holding the hawk-ages 3 and 5. Note the bandage on Roy’s foot. He had a lot of accidents.”
Grandpa was raised on a farm in Oklahoma. He wore bib overalls until he was able to buy his own clothes-about age 14. Grandpa always talks about how much he hated wearing overalls and how glad he was when he was able to wear long pants.
One story that I particularly love happened when he was 8 years old. He was always frustrated because the buckle on his overalls would be loose and would come undone. One day, he decided to fix the buckle so it would stay on the button. The problem was, instead of using a tool, he bit it! His teeth were no match for the metal buckle and his tooth broke. Instead of confessing to his parents, he waited until dinner time. At dinner, he bit into a roll and pretended that his tooth broke on the roll!
