I remember my Great Grandma Whitesell teaching me to “crochet” using my fingers when I was a kid. I don't remember when I actually began crocheting with a hook, but I did nothing but granny squares for a long time - afghan at bottom is made with granny squares.

I have a king sized bed and decided I wanted an afghan to cover it. I worked on that one for years, carried it around in a big black trash bag so I could work on it whenever I had the time. Our house got broken into and the thieves actually took that afghan to use as a "bag" to cart off their loot. They did eventually get caught and the afghan was found, but they'd used it to wrap around things they'd taken from the freezer and it was ruined from that stuff going bad. I think I was more heart broken over that than even my very expensive camera & equipment that was never recovered.

I was in love when I discovered mile-a-minute afghans, which are crocheted in strips then either crocheted or sewn together. They make portable crocheting much easier! The top afghan is an example and one of the few that I haven't given away as a gift.

I don't remember the name of the stitch used in the afghan in the center photo, but I really like it!  It's crocheted all in one piece, so gets bulky to work with as it gets larger.

Over the years I've crocheted doilies, sweaters, dolls, stuffed animals, Christmas ornaments and whatever else caught my eye, but afghans are still my favorite.

Thanks to my great granny and my mom for having the patience to teach me the craft!
