Journaling: This old vault is the original one, built by The Bank of California, who opened its door for business in the autumn of 1864.

The vault is 1042 cu ft and lined from ceiling to floor with 1/2" steel plate, especially erected into place. Outside walls are 2 ft thick around the vault.

The bank played a big role in the developement of the Comstock Lode and in financing Virginia City's great Gold and Silver boon.

During its hey dey, millions in gold and silver were stored in this old vault.

This vault was robbed of $32,000 in broad day lite, October 15th, 1927 by armed robbers who were captured shortly after. Much of the loot was never recovered and remains ina a hidden cache, so it is said, in the hills around Six Mile Canyon.
