When we travel, we usually stay at a Holiday Inn Express.  They are dog friendly, clean, comfortable, usually have an edible breakfast and aren’t horribly expensive.  One perk is they are all laid out basically the same, with the main front entrance and an exit on either end of the 1st floor leading outdoors.  As long as you have a key card, you can get back in.  After all the walking at Rock City, I was so glad to get into the hotel that night, but since Brad had driven all day, I volunteered to take Yoda out for his final potty break.  I was barefoot, because my feet hurt so badly, I had left my shoes (all 3 pairs) in the floor of the car, but I didn’t think it would be a problem since there was a nice little side yard (based on all my previous stays at other hotels) where he could walk around while I stayed on the sidewalk. The exit was close by, and when we opened the door, I saw a big rock lying there.  I realized what it was used for just as the door closed and I whipped my head around - no key entry system to be seen.  It was very dark.  It was very late. It was raining - not hard, just steady.  There was no sidewalk - just piles of rocks.  The way to the front of the building was impassable - which left going to the back of the building - through the gushing rain gutter.  (Did I mention I was barefoot?)  So, around to the back of the building we went - but there was no simple passage from there to the front, either.  Back the other way, there was a car wash and some drive-ins so I walked through their parking lots to the road to the hotel, stopped at the car for a pair of shoes, and Yoda and I straggled through the front door - soaking wet, limping (on my part) and so glad to be back inside.  It was the next morning when I looked at the pair of shoes I grabbed. Yeah - I had noticed someone smiling at my shoes the night before, but I wore them out to the car anyway.  The photos in the daylight looked much better than the scene at night.
