Journal:
I consider my son, Mickey, one of the greatest treasures and blessings of my life. We have navigated joy and sorrows together. He has always had my back, and I have always had his. Being a Mama has been my most rewarding and joyous role ... it’s really the only “career” I ever truly wanted. I knew the childhood of my kid’s would pass by in the blink of an eye, so I made the most of it. Some of my most special memories are of passing the time with them singing and dancing silly dances. I recall starting to entertain them when they were very little with a little hand puppet singing “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole – totally improvised! It made them giggle and laugh, and they would beg me to keep doing it, and I would because I loved seeing their little eyes light up. I remember thinking that someday they would find our little song silly and be embarrassed by my singing and dancing. I’m quite certain that I have embarrassed them many times, however, the song continues to be special to them. Especially to Mick. He still has the little hand puppet - a childhood treasure that I think he will always keep. At his wedding this past August, when it came time for the groom to dance with his Mama ... those familiar chords and words began over the sound system. I am thrilled to say that I didn’t cry ... I giggled, and we danced together sharing a few moments together as childhood officially ended and adult responsibilities began. I will always be his Mama, and he will always be my son. He has already made me proud with his strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and dedication to his new wife. Someday when he has kids of his own, I hope he will forget work responsibilities when time allows and get down on the floor with them and play, sing songs, dance silly dances, and make memories that will be cherished ... magical times that his kids will find “Unforgettable ... in every way”. As for me, my boy will always remain “unforgettable, too”!
