Erics first ever non-rev experience turned into a nightmare from hell! What was supposed to be a normal birthday vacation turned into a nightmare that the two of us will never recover from. We had planned a perfect rip to Fort Myers FL for my 33rd birthday. It would be Eric’s first time ever flying. Since I work for Delta Airlines we were going free of charge stand-by from Madison Wisconsin to Fort Myers beach, FL. We made it to MSN by driving mins before our plane was supposed to leave due to bad weather. We got on with no problem and thought we were scott free was there was tons of room on our next flight from Atlanta to Fort Myers. They ended up canceling that flight making every other flight that day oversold. For a non-rev this is your worst nightmare. As we fly standby there is no guarantee of a seat. You get on only if a paying customer does not show. Well to make matters worse, since I do not work for mainline Delta and only work for a connection carrier group called Delta Global services we come LAST in line for these seats. To make a long story short Eric and I tried over 16 different flights in TWO days to get to Fort Myers. We did not sleep for over 36 hours. Came close so many times only to be denied boarding. Often times they had room for one of us but not the other and there was no way we were going to spilt. We even tried to buy tickets on another airline, only to find out since we paid for the tickets 24 hours in advance only they did not post and got our reservations canceled. (I am still fighting to get a refund!). We looked into car rentals to find out one way was over $500! Both of us were in tears. It was my birthday and we were stuck in Atlanta airport, with rude staff and full of stress and sweat. We made the painful choice to head home to Madison, only to find out that it would take us 7 long flights to try to even get on! Long story short a miracle happened and we were able to finally catch a ride home to Madison on a late night flight. Over 40 hours of no sleep we made it to Madison. I had to pay for a hotel room I never expected to pay. We lost our trip we had planned for months for. I got over charged for the hotel, ended up in a room next to a huge party. And had a horrible experience. Both of us do not want to fly for a very long time and have sworn off ever flying out of Atlanta again. So much for a birthday trip. And poor Eric is now scared of flying.
