Journaling: This untitled white bronze sculpture was a gift to the Harn Museum in Gainesville Florida to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The artist, Joel Shapiro, was born in New York in 1941. He was on course to become a physician like his parents after he graduated from New York University in 1964. A two-year stint in India as a Peace Corps volunteer convinced him to become an artist instead. He returned to New York and earned a master’s degree in art. Shapiro is known for creating a dynamic balance of abstract shapes to evoke the spontaneity and energy of the human form.
