This was where the US Army taught Dad to ski before sending him off on an all-expenses paid six week skiing trip through the wilderness of Canada and Alaska in sub-zero tempatures.  And, oh! the stories Dad could tell! There was plenty of snow when we were there at the end of May (!) but this photo of the old field house shows how much more snow there could be - and that involves one of my favorite stories. When he was training there, Mom came up one day when he was off.  Dad volunteered to teach her how to snowshoe and since Mom was always ready for an adventure, off they went to the mountains on the other side of the  road from Camp Hale. The first thing Dad taught her was to lie down spread eagled in case she broke through the snow.  Everything was going great until Mom asked how deep the snow was where they were and Dad replied “Oh, about 19 or 20 feet.”  (They were in a valley.) Mom threw herself spread eagled and refused to budge until Dad convinced her that if he had to carry her, they would surely flounder.  She shakily made her way to the safety of the mountain-side where she ended her snowshoeing. I can still see Mom laughing as they told me.
