The Crazy Horse Memorial, the world’s largest Mountain Carving in progress, is in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is of the Lakota warrior Chief Crazy Horse astride a stallion with his arm and pointed hand stretched out over the horse's mane. The Mountain is 6,532 ft, the 27th highest mountain in SD, and is made of pegmatite granite. It was chosen by Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski  and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear. Henry Standing Bear was an Oglala Lakota Chief who invited sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve a memorial honoring all North American Indians.

After visiting Mount Rushmore, we drove to the Chief Crazy Horse Monument. We were absolutely blown away by the story behind it. It was commissioned in 1948 to be sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski. Ziolkowski's children and grandchildren still work on it today, and it is all paid for through private funding.
