It was 1985, my first trip to Europe. I was awed by the many wonderful museums I saw. When i visited Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, my jaw just dropped open. I admired Rembrandt, of course I did, but when I saw Vermeer’s Milkmaid, I fell in love. The light, oh the light! I was just enchanted!

I never lost that enchantment. I even have a spreadsheet with all his paintings which I update as I get to see them!

Another thread of the story comes from my teenage years. Mr. Darcy was my first crush I think! Many years later, when I saw the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice, I found Colin Firth quite irresistable as Mr. Darcy!

More years passed. My quest for seeing Vermeer’s paintings took me to The Hague where I finally saw his masterpiece, Girl with a pearl earring. Oh that look!

In 2003, I saw the film of the same name. What a film! The cinematography was just amazing! Colin Firth played Vermeer which made the film quite irresistible to me - my favourite artist, played by the embodiment of my first crush Mr. Darcy!
