Journaling: My great-grandmother made it her life's work to celebrate motherhood. As a midwife she was present at something like a thousand births. As a mother she gave life to nineteen children, with only one set of twins. My grandmother was her fourth daughter. In the photo she is seen with her own firstborn, cuddling her first-born granddaughter. My cousin is almost as old now as our great-grandmother was on this Mother's Day in 1955.
