After a satisfying breakfast, we take the metro to Porta Nuova where we meet the guide for the walking tour. As we walk through the grand boulevards, admiring the architecture and the statues, peering into old-world cafes and seeing the buzz of city life, I am surprised at how much I like it! Our first trip here in 2003 didn’t leave quite this impression. We walk through the grand Via Roma with its upmarket shops, the impressive Piazza San Carlo with its cafes, the elegant town hall, the narrow streets of the Guardinfanti area, the one km pedestrian shoppiing street of Via Garibaldi, the huge Piazza Castello with the Palazzo Reale and Madama palace, the Duomo and the Palatine and finally Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the river Po. After a light lunch, we head to the Chiesa San Lorenzo to see the copy of the famous shroud. It may be a fake but it is a 12th century fake so it has its own historical value. We check out the Duomo and the casket where the shroud is kept. Our final port of call today is to the Palazzo Reale. The amount of glitz and glitter! I am quite dazzled! The armoury is interesting too and there are a few paintings in the gallery Sabauda which I like very much. We are very tired by this time as we have walked the whole day. It is still early by the time we find a small pizzeria in a side street. We really enjoy our dinner. Then it is one more walk to the metro station and back to the hotel for a well earned rest.
