JOURNALING:  Jim and I both thoroughly enjoyed “The Legend of Georgia McBride” at the Hippodrome this past weekend.  The play tells the story of a down-on-his-luck Elvis impersonator with an empty bank account and a pregnant wife who becomes the most popular drag queen in the Florida Panhandle. But, as the director, Stephanie Lynge said, “"It’s really about finding out who you are inside and being the best person you can be."

Casey McBride, played by Jon Kovach, is the young Elvis impersonator who gains success as Georgia McBride while keeping his new persona from his wife. Caroline Strang plays his pregnant wife, Jo, a strong, independent woman who has to work hard at her relationship with Casey after she discovers his secret life.  Mark Chambers was a fantastic Miss Tracy Mills, a long-time drag queen who takes Casey under her wing. He deserved the standing ovation he received.

Kevin Kantor had some hilarious moments as Tracy’s original partner, Anorexia Nervosa, Rexy, and also plays Casey’s landlord, Jason. Charlie Mitchell plays Eddie, the owner of the struggling club where “Elvis” tanks and “Georgia” soars. This was one of the best productions I’ve seen at the Hippodrome. Jim laughed so hard at times that he cried!
