Journal:
When I was a young girl, I used to sit at my Nanny’s feet and watch her crochet. She was always doing what she called, “hand work”. This ranged from crocheting afghans, baby booties and jackets, doll dresses, and toppers for kitchen dish towels ... so many different things. She also did quilting, candlewicking (a kind of stitch work on gingham fabric). She even created items by stitching string on plastic canvas like tissue box covers, brick covers for door stops, and little eyeglass cases. As a child, I used to roll her skeins of yarn into balls for her. I think it was just busy work she gave me, but it is a special memory now of time spent with her. When she passed away, I received several of her crochet hooks. I have tried off and on to learn to crochet, but never stuck with it. The wife of one of Ryland’s coworkers has become a friend, and she loves to crochet. She has taught me a few things, and I have finally picked up Nanny’s crochet hooks and enthusiastically embraced the winter sport of crochet. I can see why she enjoyed it so much. The yarns available today are so soft and available in a wide range of beautiful colors. It brings me great joy to see the stitches come together ... especially when I am using one if Nanny’s hooks ... it’s like her hands are guiding and encouraging me.
