Journal:
Back in 2011, a New York Times critic named Alastair Macaulay reviewed “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” at the New York City Ballet. His critique included that the prima ballerina, Jennifer Ringer, as the Sugar Plum Fairy “looked as if she’d eaten one sugarplum too many.” When Mary later saw an interview of the ballerina, she was appalled by his comments. She was inspired (provoked even) to use art to express her outrage. Using a skeleton and a borrowed tutu, Mary sketched a ballerina in the four most well-known positions: first, second, third, and fourth. The sketches are provocative and shocking, and they are Mary’s statement regarding the world’s obsession with thinness. She has deep compassion and empathy about body image and self-esteem issues that are often perpetuated by publicized comments like Macaulay’s. The ballerina sketches are just the beginning of Mary’s artistic response. I’m looking forward to what she has in store for us next. Her question to Macaulay would be, “Are these ballerina’s thin enough for you?” My favorite quote from the newspaper article about her is her statement that, “you should be loved and appreciated for who you are and be happy in your own skin.”
