Journaling reads: Who knew? We had an unexpected tour guide, the engineer, and a pretty funny one at that. Not only was I going to see the mountains from the outside, but I was going to see them from the inside out, well, kinda sorta, but not really. When we reached the Continental Divide (yes, I had to look it up) he told us we would pass through 21 tunnels in the next 25 minutes, with the piece d' resistance coming after that, the 6.2 mile Moffat Tunnel, which took 10 minutes to pass through. For 35 years, I drove 6.2 miles back and forth to work, above ground in Minnesota. The tunnel took 4 years to build and the first train went through February 1928. 15 trains pass through the tunnel daily & yes, they have to take turns. They were expecting the first train to travel the tunnel in 1927, it would have cost 40 dollars to recast the 7 and change it to an 8, so they left the 7. on the entrance. We exited the tunnel at the ski area of Winter Park. I never had the opportunity to learn to ski, and now with a collection of 3 bionic parts, it seems unwise to start. We were something of a non-skiing? oddity in Fraser, but then I’m my own kind of odd in Minnesota, so nothing new. Normal is overrated. Photo descriptions: We arrived at the "depot" in Fraser, which was slightly 'smaller' than Union Station and almost 3300 feet higher. 1st Class Accommodations Not sure it was 5 star, maybe not. Built in 1904, this classic, false-fronted clapboard store, was originally known as Cozens Mercantile. The store is most celebrated for President Dwight Eisenhower's patronage during his vacations at the nearby Byer's Peak Ranch to fly fish the Fraser River. A short walk from the depot, it sits on the corner of Railroad & Eisenhower Streets. Built in 1904, this classic, false-fronted clapboard store, was originally known as Cozens Mercantile. A number of buildings had beautiful murals on the outsides of their buildings. This was our favorite.
