Ive always been a stickler for “real” books as opposed to other versions such as ebooks and audio books.  I am ashamed to admit I have privately, on occcasion,  even scoffed when I hear someone talking about having “read” a certain book by audio, or by screen.  My favourite thing to do has always been to go to bed and read a book before going to sleep, another favourite thing was to go find a nice little corner in a coffee shop and sit there, hopefully undisturbed, sip a coffee and read my “real” book.

However,  a year ago, I fell and dislocated my shoulder, did a lot of damage to tendons, ligaments and muscles and found that I could not for more than a few minutes of time, comfortably hold a book lying in bed, at a table or even sitting in my chair.  I could not drive for quite some time so could not indulge my other love (reading in a coffee shop).  I had started, prior to this, to read an occasional ebook on my phone, especially if travelling, so then that grew  to be my main reading  source during my recovery..I can drive again now, but have sadly lost the joy of coffee shop reading, and ebooks have taken over real books.

Recently, a growing interest in audiobooks has emerged and I am finding, much to my horror, that  my library reservations,  in order of preference,  are often now

1. Ebook
2. Audiobook
3. Real book

I confess to feeling saddened by this “growth”, it doesn’t feel much like a positive form of growing,  but nothing stays the same, does it!
