"Not an impressive looking place, but this is approximately where my ancestors crossed the Mississippi River in Ste. Genevieve on January 1, 1800. They were in a wagon train from North
Carolina going to Missouri to claim their Spanish land grants as Missouri was still a Spanish territory at that time. At least four lines of my family - Cotner, Crites, Slinkard, and Bollinger -
were traveling together. They were hardy German settlers mainly farmers and tradesmen whose many descendants still live in the
same two counties where those land grants were located."
