Journaling reads: I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember, actually before that! Picking a song that defines me is like picking my favorite child…cannot be done!!! So, I searched back to the first song that “moved” me, and began this life long love affair with music.
My sister is 6 years older and we shared a bedroom so I was already Rockin’ Around the Clock to her radio when I was 6. As a teen, my radio was always on. That was before sleep cycles on radios, so I just slept with it playing...truly rockin around the clock! I tried to teach myself guitar, since my parents couldn’t afford music lessons, but that didn’t work out so well!
Over the years, I continued to listen to music, around the clock, but still dreamed of playing an instrument. But, with a job and growing kids, who had the time or money? When my kids grew up, I still found plenty of excuses and now I had a new one…”I’m too old!”
Then, shortly after I retired, I heard an ad for organ lessons for seniors. I tried to use the excuse “I’m too young!” but that seemed a little far fetched! I called them and signed up. That was 6 years ago and I’m still enjoying it more than I can say. While some think of daily practice as a chore, it’s my “me” time, when the world goes away, and I love it.
My Grand-daughter recently started taking piano lessons and it’s my fondest wish that we will someday, play a duet…no audience…just the sheer joy of sharing our love of music. Maybe we’ll even play “Rock Around the Clock”!
