Great Adventure
Survivor Season #8 Week 5- Greatest Adventure
When I told my husband that I wanted a current photo of us and that I wanted to do the heart shape with our hands, he started fake gagging. LOL In the current picture my husband is wearing the same shirt he got married in, though you can only tell by the collar because of the vest. The text blended beneath the photos is our German marriage license. I was thrilled to find a German postcard in my search for goodies!

Postcard journaling: An adventure shared with someone special becomes a GREAT ADVENTURE.
Journaling:
June 1, 1974 I have arrived at the 279th Station Hopsital compound in Berlin, Germany. As I am unpacking and settling in my room, I hear someone calling from the courtyard below. I look out and see someone calling out "Frisbee- anyone for frisbee?" As he is calling out, he is bouncing and darting about, making throwing motions as if actually playing an imaginary game. What a fool, but he made me laugh. Later, there is a knock at my door and the fool is standing there with an offer of shoe shine supplies. Again, another knock at the door. This time he is offering rank pins for my uniform collar. A third time, I hear the knock. "Want some hangers?" I laugh and finally accept. The fool is "short", literally, but in military speak- he is soon to be mustering out of military service. Another twelve days and he will be leaving to return stateside. He was making the rounds at each room of the new arrivals (all females) offering an assortment of items in an effort to minimixe personal belongings prior to leaving.
There were three main groups of people at the compound; the Party Hearties, the Druggies, and the Jesus Freaks. He was among the Jesus Freaks and through him and others, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. It was an incredible time of spiritual joy and peacefulness, as well as a time of budding romance. The days flew by. The twelve days ended but we knew in that short amount of time...we wanted to marry. He left, promising to return.
A couple months passed. I learned in a letter from home that one of my dogs had died. Between homesickness and missing my new true love, the sorrow seemed unbearable. I wrote, "I miss you. My dog died. Please come back, I need you." He came back to me. Since he wasn't a military dependent, he was unable to get a job. Saving enough money would take forever to meet our hope of marrying in the states. We decided to marry in Germany. Legally, that was done through the German Justice of the Peace on September 27, 1974. A week later on October 5 we married in the eyes of God. Present at the union were our brothers and sisters in Christ. The missionary pastor married us in a small church ceremony. I wore one of my prom dresses. Denny had to crawl through the church window because the doors were locked. He made our wedding cake and we both served our guests during the reception. Our first child was "Made in Germany" but "Born in the USA." We have had many incredible adventures- made great because we shared them together. He still has the shirt he wore at our wedding. After 43 years, he still makes me laugh.
