Journaling:

I waited almost 30 years for my hero. He’s not in the military, but he did join. His knee blew out and they sent him home. He has struggled with that injury since, and always will. He doesn’t fight fires or serve and protect or keep the peace. He does keep our home fires from ever going out, protects our children and I by keeping a roof over our heads, and certainly life with him gives me a peace and joy that I have never known. My life before him was full of fear, abuse, poverty and low self-esteem. He helped me to learn my own value. He was the first person to tell me, “Try it.” He supported every time I wanted to learn anything or grow or feel, and still be safe while I did so. He has cared for me through chronic health issues. He went with me to Zumba classes when I wanted to try them. He has held me when I cried, when I laughed, held my hair as I was sick, and held me tight on a pier at the base of a lighthouse in a raging storm as the waves crashed and rolled around us and kissed me as the rain drenched wind stole my breath. He holds my hand and my heart. He’s my hero.
