JOURNALING:

To my first born son,

Three weeks from now you will be leaving home for the adventure of a lifetime. You’re going to college. I’m not sure how that is possible A.J., since it seems that just yesterday you were a little buccaneer and yet I am faced with the reality of it. As hard as it will be for me to watch you go, it’s such an exciting time for you, and I look forward to hearing all about it.  Those first weeks will be hard for both of us, no doubt. Change is tough, and although you will develop friendships in college that you will have for the rest of your life, they won’t happen overnight. You will miss your friends and family terribly at first and may feel as though you are lost at sea but hang in there and it will get easier.

I know that you are self-conscious and still sometimes refer to yourself as “socially awkward AJ”, but trust me, you will not be alone in that regard. You have the personality that will draw people to you as they get to know you, so have faith in that. I could fill a book with all of the wonderful things about you that I treasure but you would be embarrassed and give me one of your “Oh mother” looks, so I’ll spare you that. I could give you lots of college advice, but it’s probably better to let you figure out most of that  on your own. I could sit here thinking of all of the things that I wish I had done differently during your childhood, but there’s really no point in that either. All I can really do is hope that I have prepared you well for the next chapter in your life. I am so proud of the man you are becoming and know that you will do great things in this world. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. Follow your own map and make your dreams a reality! Love always, Mum
