Recently Neelix was given the ok by our local vet to start Mobility training. In order to start he had to have a serious of x-rays to make sure his growth plates were set and putting weight upon him would not do any harm to his growing body. (Dogs normally are fully grown between 18 months and two years of age).  After we got our ok, we ordered his custom harness and waited over a month for it to be complete. The day seemed like it would never come, but we finally received it in the mail! Neelix wasn’t too keen on it at first. It took quite a bit of adjusting to make sure it fit just right; having it too big or too tight could cause damage to Neelix's body when weight is placed upon it. After a few days of wearing it just to get used to it, we are currently learning how to use it for counter balance when I am having my off balance days due to vertigo spells. It is taking some getting used to. Neelix is use to a very loose heel, and in order to use the harness his heel has to be tighter and closer to my body. I have to be able to “lean” upon him as needed and hold the handle of the harness. We are currently working with a trainer to learn how much weight I can bear on Neelix and how to have him counter balance me if I am falling. He is also learning to pull me up from a sit and give me the momentum to get up hills and steep stairs. It will be quite a bit before we fully have the hang of things, but until than practice makes perfect.
