It took me 3 weeks to pack up a home which has been ours for more than 20 years. As it had been a second home for 14 of those 20 years, it should have been easy. But it was not. I packed what I wanted to keep, donated some and threw away much. The packers came on the 30th of November and in a matter of 4 or 5 hours, they packed everything into a 20 foot container. Very efficient young men. After they left, I wandered through the empty house, remembering happy times and sad times. I remembered the many important occasions we marked in this home. We had deliberated a lot before deciding to demolish and rebuild but even now I still feel very conflicted. Why did I ever agree to this? But then I looked around me and noticed that emptied of its contents, it had somehow converted from a home to a shell. Maybe there is nothing to grieve after all.
