Flat tire!
What a way to end a perfect vacation! The country of Belize has about 300,000 people which is smaller than Boise, Idaho. Most people walk, bike, or hitch-hike everywhere so having a nice roads is not a priority in this little developing country. In fact, there are only three main highways through all of Belize. We had to make the nearly 3 hour trek back to the airport from our beach house to catch our flight home when the rental car starting acting funny. After pulling over on the deserted highway, we realized we had a flat tire, but not just a flat tire, a completely destroyed flat tire. Thankfully we had a full-sized spare that was pumped up and ready to go. We had to dump all our luggage on the side of the road to access it but at least we had one. While a little “bump in the road” of our vacation, it truly could have been so much worse. With no cell phone coverage, and no towns for miles, we were very fortunate to be back on our way relatively quickly and in time to catch our flight. Whew! Crisis averted!
