JOURNALING:  Oliver is a 24 year old Western Lowland gorilla born at the Bronx Zoo to wild-born parents in 1989. He came to Columbus in 2009 after having lived alone most of his first 20 years. Oliver is deaf but quickly learned the routine at the zoo and his interactions with the other gorillas was normal. Just 5 months after this photo was taken, Oliver became a first-time father when one of his mates, Kambera, gave birth to a male gorilla named Kamoli.


Adult male gorillas are called “silverbacks” because of the area of silvery white hair on their back. Gorilla groups are usually made up of one silverback and multiple females and their offspring. Notice Oliver’s beautiful silver back.  1/29/13
