The surrounding mountains had less snowfall than usual this past winter. There has been very little precipitation from rainfall this spring. Combine that with the dry air, low humidity and strong afternoon winds, the fire danger index has become very high. Just seventy miles farther down the road a forest fire was raging with only 10% containment near the town of Durango. So, no open fires were allowed in the fire rings or barbecue grills. The only resemblance of a campfire was Denny holding a lighter for the photo. The afternoon had been very warm but the evening turned out very comfortable. There really was no need for a fire and when it finally became dark enough to enjoy gazing into the hypnotic flames of a fire, we were ready to call it a night and go to sleep.
