JOURNALING:
The Sad Tale of the Bonner Clan
This is the only picture our family has of John and Emma Bonner and their young daughter Mary. They were, I don't know, "cousins" of some sort. Anyway, it was rumored they died in a horrible accident at the Florida Ostrich Farm in Jacksonville, shortly after the place opened in the late 1800's and started giving rides on ostrich-drawn wagons. The owners, Charles and George Fraser, covered up the tragedy, burying the bodies somewhere near the St. Johns River. It wasn't until about 1950 when an old journal kept by Rufus Klondike, one of the ostrich "wranglers," was discovered that the true story came out. The ostrich, "Oliver W., Jr.", was running along at a good clip (estimated at 35 mph), John was enjoying the ride. Emma was holding on for dear life, screaming at the top of her lungs. Baby Mary was staring wide-eyed ahead as her mom clung to her to keep her from flying off the wagon. As they reached the far end of the property, John appeared to have slapped the reins. Oliver kicked back at the wagon and made a 180 degree turn at an estimated 50 mph, sending the hapless Bonners flying! Klondike helped the brothers bury the bodies and the Farm went on to become a top local attraction before many years.
