The journalling reads: Before 1791, Catholicism was illegal in Ireland, so my ancestors were forced to worship in secret. The locals of the Coollattin estate chose this boulder, which was deep in an oak forest at that time, to be their altar. They made their way on foot to Mass Rock to celebrate their faith each Sunday, rain or shine. On July 19, 2018, we Canadian descendants of Coollattin and many of the people of Tinahely joined together at Mass Rock in a prayer of thanks to God and in praise of our ancestors for their courage, which allowed each of us to be. It was a profoundly moving moment when Father Brendan led us in prayer, and when Ann-Marie Connolly (Keogh) sang the haunting As I Leave Behind Néidin, we vowed always to remember this day and these people.
