JOURNALING: June 29, 2019, Columbus Crew SC inducted the late Sigi Schmid into the club's "Circle of Honor" at Mapfre Stadium, becoming only its third member. Schmid coached Columbus from 2006-2008 and led them to their only MLS Championship that final season. He also coached the Galaxy and Sounders during his nearly 20 years in MLS, becoming the league's winningest manager. He won the MLS Cup twice, three Supporters' Shields, five U.S. Open Cups, and a Concacaf Champions Cup. In 2015 he was elected to the national Soccer Hall of Fame. The MLS Coach of the Year award is named in his honor. He was also a successful college coach at UCLA. In addition to video board clips of former Crew players talking about Schmid, his widow and two of their sons and their families were on hand for the presentation. Sigi passed away on Christmas Day 2018, awaiting a heart transplant.
