Hoppette was a wild female squirrel who lived in our backyard in the late 1980s to early 1990s. I half-tamed her, to the point where she would sit on my knee and eat peanuts out of my hand. She taught all her litters to do the same thing, and for generations the squirrels on the block would beg for peanuts from my mom and me. After I moved out on my own, got married, and moved back to Vancouver in 2009, my mom told me the squirrels were still letting her know when they needed more peanuts by hanging on the screen door or chittering at her from the porch railing! I have no doubt that it was all because one plucky little Hoppette decided to let the human girl feed her!
