JOURNALING:
I'm a Star
As a kid, I took ballet lessons, even progressing to being "en pointe." My top memory of that time was when I played "Clara" in our school's Christmas holiday production based on scenes from "The Nutcracker" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The school's director, Madame Nagy, had been a choreographer in Hollywood, but moved to a Columbus suburb when she married a local professor at The Ohio State University. She opened a ballet school in her home and put on a spring recital every year.
This particular year had been a very tragic one in Columbus as January flooding devastated many parts of the city. One neighborhood, ironically named "Wonderland", was particularly hard hit and many citizens still needed housing assistance nearly a year later. Ms. Nagy decided to put on a holiday recital to raise funds to help these people. And, much to everyone's surprise, was able to get one of her best friends from her California days, Danny Kaye, to appear in the show.
I can still remember, at the end of the show, after the students had taken their bows, Mr. Kaye came out and took his. Then he went over to me, took my hand, and led me to the front of the stage where we took a bow together! I felt like a REAL star!
And we raised over $3000! (Over $25K in today's money)
