When I was a child about 8 or 9 years old we lived in Kansas City and often went to the Swope Park Zoo to just play on the grounds outside of the zoo.  There was a pond there and in the winter we would often go there to ice skate on the pond.  This particular winter we were skating on the pond and having a great time.  Then I began to skate too close to the edge of the pond, and the next thing I knew I was falling through the ice!  I remember the freezing cold water as it began to envelope me....how quickly the numbness of the cold made my body begin to sting from the icy coldness....I remember the fear as it gripped my mind and all the horror stories my brothers had told us about what would hgappen to us if we fell through the ice.  I was just short of beginning to let panick overwhelm me when I felt my older brother grab my arm and pull me from the water, over to, and up on, the shore. I have very few memories after that point except for how very cold I felt and how long the walk home seemed!  I know we were all scared to death about what our parents were going to say or do to us when we got home.  We knew we would never be allowed to go back to skate on the pond again.  But when we got home, our parents were not at home.  My older siblings got me into clothes and covered me with blankets until I was warm once again.  Then they threatened our lives if we ever told our parents what had happened. Both my parents have passed on....and to this day I have no idea if they ever found out I had fallen through the ice..  I only know I never told them....I was more afraid of my older siblings than my parents!
