We have many traditions in our family as most families do. Some just everyday traditions you don't realize until you start thinking about it and some revolve strictly around holidays.

Christmas time brought the most traditions out. After Thanksgiving, the baking and candy making started!  Since we lived in Wisconsin, around Christmas there were frequently Cookies or candies cooling off on top of the cars in the garage. That was one good smelling garage in the evenings! We decorated the tree. (UGH tinsel went on one strand at a time!) Driving around at night looking at all the Christmas decorations. Visiting cousins to see their gifts or them visiting us. Christmas Eve programs at church.

However, there is one tradition we all look forward to even now. HUGH'S CHOCOLATES! For as long as I can remember, every Christmas we got a 5 pound box of mixed chocolates. This store was always run out of the owner’s basement. They never moved from the basement because they didn't want the overhead costs. (that's what I hear anyway). You had to get there early in the season or they would run out of a particular candy. The closer to Christmas the longer the lines grew, and it was a small purchasing area, so most people waited outside in the cold winter. If the weather was really bad, they would allow people to come into the stair landing as much as possible. We each had our favorite of course. Toffee, double chocolate, turtles, caramels, and more. Other than for the toffee and peanut lusters, we would poke our finger in the bottom to see what a piece was. If we didn't like it, Daddy would always eat it. When I was young, there were some that would buy 5 pound boxes to just have on hand if someone came to visit during the holidays. Even now, those of us who have left Wisconsin will send orders back to those still living there to pick up our chocolates and send them to us! This store is open from Halloween to Mother's day and as far as I am concerned, the best chocolates around!
