Toy soldiers became associated with Christmas around the same time that nutcrackers were integrated into the festive holiday. In German folklore, nutcrackers, which were often designed to look like small wooden soldiers, were given as gifts at Christmastime to bring luck and to protect the family home.
Then in 1892, Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, The Nutcracker, debuted. Because the ballet is set on Christmas Eve (and the hero is a nutcracker come to life), the products quickly became associated with holiday decor.
Samantha was very creative in putting this soldier together, followed by another for a pair to guard their front porch over the holidays!
