The exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art, presented  in conjunction with The Maurice Sendak Foundation, was the first major retrospective of the artist since his death in 2012. The goal of the exhibit was to explore the beauty and mischief-making his art had generated over his sixty-year career.

A self-taught artist, Sendak, born in new York in 1928,  began illustrating books in 1952, but it wasn’t until he won the prestigious Caldecott Medal that he became famous. In the late 70’s, Sendak began a second career designing productions for the stage including “The Magic Flute” and “Nutcracker”, working with some of the greatest directors and composers of his time.   3/1/23
